    Adjusting your v.90 or v.92 protocols on your modem when dialing CGAZ.COM

    If you have a 56k, v.90 or v.92 modem and you are dialing into CGAZ.COM's access numbers, but having some connection speed issues, you might have to add an intialization string to the settings of your modem.

    Macintosh users - click here for instructions.

    Windows users - We have had success with the following generic initialization strings and encourage you to try them first, one by one, as we find they work with a variety of modems.

    Try these first!
    AT-V90=0
    AT+MS=V34
    ATS38=0
    ATS32=98

    If you have no luck with the four generic strings listed above, try referring to the table below - look for your brand of modem and try the string associated with your modem. If your modem is not listed in the table below, try using the strings anyway - even though it may be for a different brand, the chipset (eg. Rockwell or Lucent, two of the most common) may be the same and may work for you!

    *If you know a string that is not listed here, please let us know and we'll add it.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: Adding an intialization string to your modem affects all dial-up connections. If you dial in to another Internet service provider who does support 56k, you must remove the string in order to connect at maximum speed.

    Where do I put the modem intialization string?

    Using Windows 95/98/NT:

    1. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modems.
    2. Highlight the modem and click Properties.
    3. Select the Connections tab and click the Advanced button.
    4. In the Extra Settings box, add the string you wish to use.

    Note: With NT you must be logged in as Administrator to make this change.

    None of the strings in your list work!

    If you have tried all the generic strings, as well as all the other listed strings, there's not a whole lot more we can do to help. The strings listed above are the ones we know about, if they don't work, contact the manufacturer of your modem and ask them. You can also try searching the web. Below are some places to get you started:

    You can also try doing a basic web search on your modem's manufacturer's name.

    How do I find out what brand of modem I have?

    Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel. Click the Modems icon; your modem will be listed. If you still aren't sure, or if it just says "standard modem", go to www.808news.com/56k/whomadeit.htm, it may assist you in finding out.
